This is my first attempt (above) at a precision 5mm compression bearing holder as used in the early Ericsson keys using my new Mini Mill
below is the  key fitted to the bearings, these are Classic Ericsson dimensions.
These early Ericsson designs have a lean mean look about them, probably due to the single angled back front contact post, also a lot of brass work at the front to accommodate the various connections this type of key had, this particular YUH version will hopefully be fairly close to the original in most respects such as the bearings and contacts but will be limited in the front brass connections as those would be redundant today, yet hopefully capture the essence of these famous keys.
Now it is a working key one is reminded that the bearings are of the simple sleeve type, and therefore require very fine adjustment to get the best out of them, It is so easy with ball race keys to just grab a hold and start sending without much thought, perhaps a quick tweak on the contact gap, but with this key it's all about getting just the right amount of pressure on the bearing and then locking in place with no further movement, also the tension adjustment  has a effect on the bearings with this type of key, all a part of the lost art of telegraphy.
Now the key is complete I went for the vintage patina look,  bright and shiny didn't seem to suit this key, it is a real heavyweight one of the biggest keys I've made but very pleasant to use.
